Short answer: the cost of a Sydney removalist depends on how much you are moving, how easy your homes are to access, how far apart they are and whether you need packing. Most removalists charge either by the hour or with a fixed price agreed upfront. BBC Removals offers both, and every quote is free and obligation-free.

This guide explains what actually drives the price of a move in Sydney, the questions to ask so there are no surprises on the day, and the simple things you can do to keep your move quicker and cheaper. It is written by our Artarmon-based team, drawing on more than 30 years of moving homes and businesses across Sydney.

Hourly rate or fixed price: which is better?

Sydney removalists usually price a job in one of two ways.

At BBC Removals we offer fixed-price quotes as well as hourly bookings, and we will recommend whichever works out best for your move. Either way, the price is explained upfront.

What affects the cost of a removalist in Sydney?

1. How much you are moving

Volume is the biggest factor. It decides the size of the truck, the number of movers and how long loading and unloading take. The number of bedrooms is a rough guide, but a sparsely furnished three-bedroom house can be quicker to move than a two-bedroom unit packed with books, a home office and a garage full of tools.

Home size Typical crew Typical truck
Studio / 1-bedroom unit 2 movers Small to medium truck
2-bedroom unit or small house 2 movers Medium truck
3-bedroom house 2–3 movers Large truck
4+ bedroom house 3+ movers Large truck, sometimes two trips
A general guide only. We confirm the right crew and truck when we quote.

2. Access at both ends

Access often matters as much as volume. Stairs with no lift, a long carry from the truck to the front door, steep driveways, narrow terrace hallways and lifts that must be booked all add time. In apartment buildings, check whether you need to book a goods lift or loading dock and whether your strata has set move-in or move-out hours.

3. Distance, traffic and parking

A move from Artarmon to Chatswood is very different from a move across the Harbour Bridge in peak hour. Travel time between homes, clearways, and whether the truck can park close to the door all affect the time a job takes. Good planning, such as reserving a parking space or starting early, can save a surprising amount.

4. Packing and unpacking

If everything is boxed and ready when the crew arrives, loading is fast. If the crew needs to pack on the day, the job takes longer. Professional packing is an extra service, but it is often worth it for kitchens, fragile items and busy households, because professionally packed boxes are quicker to load and far less likely to be damaged.

5. Heavy, bulky or delicate items

Large glass-top tables, marble, safes, gym equipment, oversized fridges and antiques may need extra hands, special equipment or dismantling. Mention them when you ask for a quote so the right crew and gear are booked.

6. When you move

Fridays, weekends, the end of the month and school holidays are the busiest times to move in Sydney, because that is when leases end and settlements happen. Booking early gives you the best choice of dates, and a mid-week, mid-month move is usually the easiest to schedule.

Questions to ask so there are no surprises

Whichever removalist you choose, ask these before you book:

At BBC Removals, our movers are our own trained staff, not subcontractors; every move is insured; and your quote spells out exactly what is included.

7 ways to make your move quicker and cheaper

  1. Declutter first. Sell, donate or dump what you do not need. Less volume means a smaller truck and a shorter job.
  2. Have everything packed and sealed before the crew arrives, or book our packing service the day before.
  3. Label boxes by room so unloading is fast and nothing needs moving twice.
  4. Book lifts and loading docks at both buildings and tell us the times.
  5. Keep a parking space clear for the truck as close to the entrance as possible.
  6. Take beds and flat-pack furniture apart in advance if you are comfortable doing it.
  7. Choose a quieter day if your dates are flexible, and ask for a fixed price if you want certainty.

Removalist costs: frequently asked questions

Do you offer fixed-price removals quotes?

Yes. We offer fixed-price quotes as well as hourly bookings. A fixed price means you know the total before moving day, whatever the traffic does.

Why don’t you list prices on the website?

Because two moves of the same size can take very different amounts of time. Stairs, lifts, parking and distance change the job, so a quote based on your actual move is more accurate, and fairer, than a generic price list.

Is packing included in the price?

Packing is an optional extra. You can pack yourself, have us pack the whole home, or just the kitchen and fragile items. We will include whatever you choose in your quote.

Is it cheaper to move on a weekday?

Weekdays away from the end of the month are usually easier to book, and quieter roads can make the move quicker. If your dates are flexible, let us know when you ask for a quote.

Are my belongings insured?

Yes. Every move with BBC Removals is insured, and our trained, in-house movers use blankets and protective wrapping on your furniture.
